A Typographic Study of Connected Forms
The ligature is all about making a connection, turning two or more letter forms into one. This connection can be concrete, subtle, or even just implied as long as the forms are working together as one unit. Whether the form is physically connected and how much space is shared is up to the type designer.
For an entire (leap) year, I designed typographic ligatures consisting of two or more letters or glyphs. The aim of this project was to explore letterform creation through sketching and rendering the letterforms digitally. Each Sunday, I created an ampersand and released them under the tag "Ampersunday".
Many styles were explored, including traditional typographic ligatures, orthographic ligatures, and even psychic ligatures (non-connected ligatures)—all with custom letters in many classifications.
The project started with a numerical countdown on December 21, 2015 and went until December 31, 2016.
Poster Collection
When the project was completed, the ligatures were compiled into a poster showcasing every ligature, with emphasis on the most popular based on likes and comments on social media.
Website
As well as releasing the ligatures on social media, I created a website that showcased the ligatures in a searchable format. The website was coded by hand using Angular.js as a single page, fully responsive application.
The website features interactive elements like swiping through the images, a ligature search by date, and a history and overview of ligatures.
