Data with a Pen Pal
Inspired by Giorgia Lupi and Stefanie Posavec, creators of the Dear Data book, these postcards in a data visualization class and sent between myself and an undergraduate student in Massachusetts named Cynthia.
The drawings were all made by hand using traditional drafting tools and art supplies. The analog process of creating graphics from small data allows for the personality of the sender to come through the work.
We agreed upon six different weekly topics to record about ourselves, then transform into a simple visualization. The front of the card houses the visuals, while the back has a key for reading the information. Each week we physically mailed and interpreted each other's work.
Collection of Data
To finalize the project, a chipboard box was constructed to house reproductions of the postcards. The box is held together with a simple rubber band.
