Spinning Top Kits

Color and Assemble

The spinning top kits were designed as a new product line for Bright Beam Goods. The product is laser cut from a 1/8in sheet of baltic birch plywood and features a wide variety of geometric patterns that can be colored with pencils or markers. Once the top is colored, the pieces of the top assemble without glue, and the rounded tip design makes them safe for younger kids.

Inexpensive and Fun

Since many of the products in the Bright Beam lineup had left over material from the cutting process, a small product needed to be designed to make use of the otherwise scrapped material. The spinning top kits did just that, but ultimately became popular enough to need full-scale production.

Another goal for the project was to make the lease expensive product possible for a small laser production shop, so that a child could use their own money to buy the toy. The modular nature of the pieces allow for kids to swap the patterns and see how they look when spinning.

Packaging

The packaging consists of a thin paper card, a clear plastic sleeve, and the product itself. The minimalist packging protects the product but relies on the product for structure. This makes them very light to keep shipping costs low.

The card explains the product and shows a simple diagram for how to assemble the pieces. The way the product is cut maximizes the efficency of the cut time, making the product quick to produce and easy to package.

Retail Displays

The large display showcases twelve different spinning tops. The fully-stocked display comes with ten of each design—120 tops in all. The front of the display acts as a spinning surface to test the three included sample tops with raised edges to prevent the tops from falling off the display. The small display is similar, but holds half as many top designs. The smaller display fits nicely on a counter by a register.

The displays are made from the same 1/8in plywood and ship flat. The retail store received simple instructions for assembling the display, which doesn't require glue to stay together.
